The Architectural Practice Academy was invited perform the role of creative director for the 2011 Brisbane Regional Architecture Awards, held at the Brisbane Powerhouse. We chose the theme ‘Metropolis’, after Fritz Lang’s 1927 silent film. Through a series of friday afternoon workshops, the APA designed the exhibition and produced the graphics, invitations and other theming for the event. Due to the tight budget, we extensively used cardboard and our own labour to create several aircraft, a confectionery fountain and some faux-wildlife to populate the tent, while custom GOBO projections onto the wall of the building and around the tent set the atmosphere at minimal cost.
My role on the project was a principal designer and to some degree project manager, designing the tent layout, graphics and overseeing the assembly of the marquee and exhibition.
The night ran flawlessly and we certainly enjoyed ourselves. It was a pleasure working with the Australian Institute of Architects and the Brisbane Powerhouse on such an unusual project.
